Royal Spoonbill Spectacular

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

This week at least four large groups of royal spoonbill have passed through Whanganui, on their northern migration, and what a spectacular sight they have been. This morning 70 of them were found resting together, in shallow water, on the Whanganui River Estuary. One had plumage of a different colour, some type of colour aberration. Spoonbill general nest in the South, but during winter large numbers are found on Northland. I am not aware of any nesting colonies up there.
