Nankeen night herons are again putting on a good show.

The Nankeen night herons at Upokongaro, near Whanganui, are busy with nests and chicks, and it looks like we are going to have another bumper breeding season. There are five active nests, in three different trees, and already there are chicks out and about in the cafe's trees. It has been great to see a chick from last year and be able to study the plumage of a one-year-old bird. The picture below shows a current chick at left, and last year's chick, now a one-year-old, at right. The picture at bottom is an adult bird, sitting near a nest.
