Over the last several months it has been very enjoyable to be able to visit the night herons at Upokongaro, near Whanganui. Never before have we been able to follow a breeding season, from nest building, through to chick fledging. Possibly the last of the chicks was showing very nicely this morning and was able to be enjoyed by many people visiting the cafe. Soon all the birds will be back to their daytime sleeping routine and seeing them in daylight then becomes just a random chance.
