Near Whanganui, along the river in several places, are found Nankeen Night Heron, a very rare bird in NZ, and not known to nest anywhere else. I have been fortunate to view them often over the years, and was pleased to find them again this year, near the Cafe at Upokongaro. The bird pictured is in plumage between an immature and an adult, and favoured us by showing itself in daylight.
